West Nile Sensitized on Mediation

The Judiciary has combed different districts under the West Nile sub-region sensitizing them on Mediation, one of the alternative dispute resolution mechanisms in the courts.

The Judiciary's Senior Communications Officer, Mr. Solomon Muyita, led the field team that carried out community outreach campaigns in the districts of Packwach, Nebbi,Arua, Maracha and Koboko visiting sub-counties as well as JLOS institutions.

According to Mr. Muyita, there is need to continuously sensitize people in different parts of the country on the quick, affordable and convenient ways of settling disputes outside litigation.

The sensitization climaxed with a talk show on Arua One FM where Hon. Justice David K. Wangutusi, the head of the Commercial Court accompanied by Deputy Registrars HW Vincent Emmy Mugabo and HW Joyce Kavuma, Arua Chief Magistrate HW Jeneva Natukunda andlawyer Mr Peter Pacuto; made a case for Mediation.

Theshow generated a lot of live-phone-in calls as well as several socialmedia posts about ADR.

The previous day, Justice Wangutusi and HW Mugabo were invited to sensitize Muslims at the Arua Main Mosque during the 7pm prayers. Hajj Habib Aruma, the Uganda Muslim Supreme Council Secretary General, Arua, invited the Judiciary team to the Mosque.

Hon.Justice Wangutusi said such sensitizations are necessary so that the public can understand that not all cases are completed through litigation.

ADR encompasses all legally permitted processes of dispute resolution other than litigation. These processes and techniques act as a means of disagreeing parties to come to an agreement with or without the help of a third party.
